Antique African Dogon Carved Wood Door. From Mali, West Africa. Relief carved with repeating figural designs. Comes with supporting stand.

The Dogon are an ethnic group indigenous to the central plateau region of Mali in West Africa, south of the Niger bend, near the city of Bandiagara, and in Burkina Faso. The population numbers between 400,000 and 800,000. They speak the Dogon languages, which are considered to constitute an independent branch of the Niger-Congo language family, meaning that they are not closely related to any other languages. The Dogon are best known for their religious traditions, their mask dances, wooden sculpture, and their architecture. Since the 20th Century, there have been significant changes in the social organization, material culture and beliefs of the Dogon, in part because Dogon country is one of Mali’s major tourist attractions. Historically, Dogon villages were established in the Bandiagara area a thousand years ago because the people collectively refused to convert to Islam and retreated from areas controlled by invading Muslims, finding easily defensible areas close to water sources. Dogon art consists primarily of sculptures, mainly made of wood. Dogon art revolves around religious values, ideals, and freedoms, and are not made to be seen publicly, commonly hidden from the public eye within the houses of families, sanctuaries, or kept with the Hogon (spiritual leader). The importance of secrecy is due to the symbolic meaning behind the pieces and the process by which they are made. Most figural carvings include people with raised arms, superimposed bearded men, horsemen, stools with caryatids, women with children, figures covering their faces, women grinding pearl millet, and women bearing vessels on their heads. Other sculptures include donkeys bearing cups, musicians, dogs, quadruped-shaped troughs or benches, figures bending from the waist, mirror-images, aproned figures, and standing figures. Influence from the ancient Tellem (known as “those who were before us” in the Dogon language) art is evident in Dogon art because of its rectilinear designs, which appeared among the works of the people who lived in Mali between the 16th and 11th Centuries BC. The Awa is a masked dance society that holds ritual and social importance to the Dogon, and contributes to their artistic output. It has a strict code of etiquette, obligations, interdicts, and a secret language (sigi sǫ). All initiated Dogon men participate in Awa, with the exception of some caste members. Women are forbidden from joining and prohibited from learning sigi sǫ. The Awa is characterized by the intricate masks worn by members during rituals, with each mask signifying a different deity, person, or concept. From the 20th Century onward, the once rarely-seen activities of the Awa have become a primary source of tourism for the region, as outsiders flock to observe their rituals and potentially acquire some of their sculpture and other artwork.
