Robert Rait was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on April 15th, 1807. He became an apprentice to the metalsmith John Muir Sr. in Glasgow when he was eleven, and immigrated to the United States in 1832, establishing his own business on Broadway in New York City in 1833. It is likely he sought to build his own legacy in a new country as his older brother David Crichton Rait was already a renowned silver and goldsmith in Scotland by then, but there is some debate over this, as his decision to travel came about unexpectedly and coincided with his abrupt marriage to Jean Aitchison, the daughter of another well-known Scottish silversmith. He was successful enough to run a shop all by himself for a relatively small group of clients who regularly commissioned him, making his pieces unique, personalized, and highly sought after by collectors. Although the work became more difficult in his forties and he finally took on an apprentice (name unknown) in the mid 1850s, the Civil War decimated his business, and after the death of his wife he closed his shop in 1866. Having never had children, he lodged with one of the families that had been his biggest supporters, the Adlands, and focused instead on creating a new mercantile business that was barely off the ground when he died unexpectedly from a fall during an epileptic fit on February 1st, 1869.
