Anjelica Huston was born on July 8th, 1951 in Los Angeles, California. Her father was director and actor John Huston and her mother was prima ballerina and model Enrica Soma. When Huston was 2 years old her family relocated to County Kildare, Ireland, where she grew up lonely and reserved because of her parents’ multiple marriages and extramarital affairs, often left in the care of nannies or tutors. Her father’s film A Walk with Love and Death (1969) marked her screen debut, but it was a critical failure. Her mother died in a car accident in Switzerland while Huston was on set, and she relocated to New York City to avoid film and her father. She pursued modelling, and became a frequent subject of Bob Richardson, with whom she lived until 1973. She was signed to Ford Models in the early 1970s and worked in Europe walking the runway for brands such as Zandra Rhodes, Yamamoto, Armani, and Valentino. She also became part of fashion designer Halston’s favored troupe of models, nicknamed the Halstonettes. When Huston met actor Jack Nicholson she moved to California to be with him and focus on acting. She worked in a series of small but varied parts before her father cast her in a darkly comic role in Prizzi’s Honor (1985) opposite Nicholson. The film was a financial and critical success, and she won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the role, making her the third generation of her family to do so (and the first of only three families to ever achieve such an honor). She starred in her father’s last film The Dead in 1987, but watching him slowly deteriorate during shooting had an adverse effect on her own health, as she developed Epstein-Barr syndrome and considered leaving film for good. However, the film received two Academy nominations and she won Best Supporting Female from the Independent Spirit Awards, followed by a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Woody Allen’s dramedy Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989). The drama Enemies, A Love Story earned her a second Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress that same year. Huston next portrayed a veteran con artist in the neo-noir thriller The Grifters (1990), which brought her another nomination for an Academy Award, this time for Best Actress, and then the matriarch Morticia Addams in The Addams Family which garnered her a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actress (as did its sequel). She acted in Manhattan Murder Mystery for Woody Allen on ABC in 1993, earning both a BAFTA and Golden Globe nomination, and her performance in The Perez Family in 1995 brought her nominations for Best Supporting Actress from the Hollywood Foreign press and the Screen Actors Guild. After obtaining an Emmy nomination for her work in Buffalo Girls in 1996, she began to grow tired of acting (and never winning awards) and decided to explore directing, following in her father’s footsteps. Her first outing, Bastard Out of Carolina, earned her an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Miniseries or Special. She began a series of collaborations with director Wes Anderson, and won her first Golden Globe after seven previous nominations for her work in Iron Jawed Angels (2005). In 2010 she was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and released two memoirs in 2013 and 2014, respectively. Today she continues to work in film, television, and doing voiceovers, as well as focusing more and more on activism, particularly for animal rights.
