Alice Elaine Du Bain (nee Hilliker) was born on March 31st, 1924 in San Francisco, California. She was the great-granddaughter of James Achilles Douglas, one of the first settlers in Sacramento in 1849 and the first Sheriff of Yolo County in 1855. While attending the San Francisco School of Art in 1942 she met Myron Du Bain, an officer in the United States Navy. They married in 1944, before her husband was shipped off to the Pacific Theatre in command of a PT boat. After the war Myron pursued a career in business, rising to become the Chief Executive Officer of Fireman’s Fund Insurance Companies, while also serving on multiple corporate and charitable boards. This afforded Alice the time and support needed to continue pursuing her art, painting over 50 impressionist works around the world while raising their two children and accompanying Myron on numerous business trips. She was a member of the Society of California Pioneers, the Town and Country Club, and the Lagunitas Club, and regularly attended and supported the San Francisco Opera. Much of her artwork was donated to charitable causes, with one solo exhibition in the early 2000s at the San Francisco Arts Commission, and most of her works found their way to private collections. She passed away peacefully in her home in Kentfield, California on June 12th, 2021.
