Alfonso Iannelli was born in Andretta, Italy on February 17th, 1888. He and his father came to America in 1898, traveling throughout the country for work. A self-taught illustrator, he began designing posters for the vaudeville acts appearing at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles in 1910. Architect John Lloyd Wright saw his work, and the two became friends, with John introducing him to his father Frank, who invited Iannelli to work with him on his Midway Gardens project in 1914. Iannelli created several of the Midway’s Sprite sculptures for Wright. Wright, however, claimed credit for the pieces, leading to a bitter division and the ultimate demise of their brief partnership. He relocated to Chicago and studied to be a sculptor under Gutzon Borglum, later famous for Mount Rushmore. In 1929 he collaborated with Chicago architect Ernest A. Grunsfeld III on several Art Deco-style plaques for the Adler Planetarium. These contributions include the zodiac signs of astrology and depictions of the planets in their mythological forms, with his iconic stylized figures frequently imitated during the heyday of the Art Deco movement. Ianelli simultaneously designed an exterior fountain for the Riverside Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma, built by the architect Bruce Goff. This led him to work on the Woodbury County Courthouse for the Purcell & Elmslie Firm, as well as with architect Barry Byrne on several church projects in the Midwest and Ireland. His contributions to the 1933 Century of Progress at the Chicago World’s Fair included the Radio Flyer and Havoline Thermometer Buildings. In 1935, undeterred by the Great Depression, he opened Iannelli Studios in Park Ridge, Illinois in collaboration with his wife Margaret, a talented illustrator and artist herself. Iannelli Studios grew to become one of Chicago’s most famous art studios into the 1940s, expanding into commercial design, advertising, product design, and architectural interiors. Iannelli also designed many significant interiors for movie theaters, two of which remain in operation today: the Pickwick Theater in Park Ridge and the Catlow Theater in Barrington, Illinois. He also designed the large-scale Rock of Gibraltar relief on the facade of the Prudential Building (now called One Prudential Plaza) in Chicago. He died on March 23rd, 1965, with his children and grandchildren going on to be artists in their own right.
