Alexander Dobrovolsky was born in 1957 in Leningrad. He grew up in the heart of the Soviet Union, and was drawn to art early on, particularly enamored with Russian folk art and the expressionist movement. He graduated from the Vera Mukhina Higher School of Art and Design in 1985 (now known as the Saint Petersburg Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design), and studied further with the architect and graphic artist Vladimir Sergeevich Lukyanov, examining neo-classical themes. His artwork was not appreciated until the fall of the Soviet Union due to his Symbolist imagery and subversion of Soviet Realism themes, but since the late 1990s his works have been found in collections around the world as he creates landscapes, genre paintings, and still lifes that seek to capture idealized images of peasant and old Russian life with his own neo-expressionist style. In 2000 he and several other artists created Creative Things Studio, an informal artist collective in Saint Petersburg which has exhibited at the State Russian Museum, Gatchina Palace and the Estate Museum in the European University, and continues to hold events throughout Russia and Eastern Europe.
