Albert Anderson Clymer was born in Denison, Texas in 1942. While studying architecture at Texas A&M University, he became fascinated with other aspects of design, eventually shifting his focus to painting, particularly with acrylics. Finally abandoning architecture altogether in 1967, he became a professional artist known for using fiberboard in experimental ways. He achieved national recognition through a series of 187 one-man shows and received assorted awards in California, Texas, New York, and Paris. Clymer starts his paintings by covering hard boards with a mixture of white acrylic gesso and matte medium. He then brushes a thin wash of color over chosen areas of a painting to achieve unusual effects he termed “crazing.” The effects can be widely varied by the dilution of the mixture and the angle of tilt on the canvas when applied while it is crazing and the moment of drying. This particular piece demonstrates his use of color and further experimentation, as the grass in the image is created by gouging streaks vertically through the paint, creating a unique depth of field and contrast.
