Waterford Crystal is a manufacturer of lead glass or “crystal,” especially in cut glass, named after the city of Waterford, Ireland. The origins of crystal production in Waterford date back to 1783 when George Penrose and his nephew William started their business, the Waterford Glassworks. It produced extremely fine flint glass that became world-renowned. The company closed in June 1851 towards the end of the Great Famine, with the loss of 53-100 jobs. Multiple attempts to revive the company by the Irish government faltered for nearly a century, in part due to the two World Wars. Between 1947 and 1987 the company flourished under several different companies, and through the auspices of several different countries, including Czechoslovakia, Germany, and China, before consolidating into an Irish holding company called Waterford Wedgwood plc. In January 2009 the main manufacturing base on the edge of Waterford was closed due to insolvency brought on by the Great Recession, and in June 2010 Waterford Crystal relocated back to the roots of glass-making in the city center. As of 2015 the brand is owned by the Fiskars Corporation, and nearly all production is handled outside of Ireland, although they remain famous for their numerous unique creations, including the crystal ball that drops in Times Square in New York that they made in honor of the new Millennium.
In 1820 a partnership was established in Sheffield by Henry Wilkinson and John Roberts, trading as Wilkinson & Roberts. Wilkinson left the business in 1836, and in 1846 John Roberts entered in partnership with Ebenezer Hall (his apprentice since 1836) under the style Roberts & Hall. In 1854 the company joined forces with Richard Martin (of Martin Brothers & Naylor) and Joshua Hall (the brother of Ebenezer Hall), and the name was changed to Martin, Hall & Co. In 1866 the firm was converted into a limited company. The factory was active at Shrewsbury Works, Broad Street Park, Sheffield with showrooms in Sydney, Birmingham, Glasgow, and London. They were listed as manufacturing silversmiths and electroplated manufacturers, making silver, plated, and steel cutlers. Robert & Hall participated in the 1851 Great Exhibition, and Martin, Hall & Co. contributed award-winning pieces to the International Exhibition of 1862, the Sydney Exhibition of 1879, the Melbourne Exhibition of 1881 and the 1915 British Industries Fair. Besides its sterling silver and electroplated items the firm had a successful cheap line of production on a patented white metal called “Martinoid.” Items made by Martin, Hall & Co. were retailed by nearly every one of the major outlets at the time, across the British Empire. World War I devastated the company, and after a brief attempt to join forces with Gladwin Limited the firm went into liquidation in 1929. The assets were sold to Frank Cobb & Co. in 1930, who continued to use their name and patterns until 1936 when they were discontinued for good.
Silver plate (also written as “silverplate”) has been used since the 18th Century to provide cheaper versions of household items that would otherwise be made of solid silver, including cutlery, vessels of various kinds, and candlesticks. In the United Kingdom the assay offices, silver dealers, and collectors use the term “silver plate” for items made from solid silver, derived long before silver plating was developed from the Spanish word for silver “plata.” The earliest form of silver plating was Sheffield Plate, where thin sheets of silver are fused to a layer or core of base metal, but in the 19th Century new methods of production (including electroplating) were introduced. For modern applications in electronics, silver is sometimes used for plating copper, as its electrical resistance is lower. Care should be used for silver plated pieces exposed to high humidity environments, because the silver layer is porous and may contain cracks, allowing the underlying copper (or other metals) to undergo rapid galvanic corrosion, flaking off the plating and exposing the copper itself. Silver plated copper maintained in a moisture-free environment will not undergo this type of corrosion, theoretically lasting for many centuries.
