Geoffrey Chaucer (c 1343-1400), known as the "father of English literature" and author of The Canterbury Tales, of which this prologue and story are the first two parts.
Joseph Addison and Richard Steele created the character Sir Roger de Coverley in The Spectator (1711), a daily publication that presented numerous treatises on philosophy, literature, and society through witty, fictional anecdotes, with Coverely (originally the name of a Scottish folk dance) one of the most popular figures.
La Poudre Aux Yeux is an 1861 comedy in 2 acts written by Eugene Labiche (1815-1888), who wrote nearly two hundred plays in his lifetime and contributed to the evolution of comedy from "low" into "high" art, primarily through vaudeville and farce.
Theodore Storm (1817-1888) wrote Immensee in 1849, a semi-autobiographical symbolic novel about a lifelong love triangle that gained him international acclaim when it was revised and translated in 1851. The two different printings of the work attest to its longevity and literary impact.
