(4) Italian Venetian Carnival Masks. Group of four Venetian carnival masks; two clowns, one bird, one demon.
Venetian masks are elaborate, decorative masks traditionally worn during the Carnival of Venice, a festival dating back to the 12th century. Originally used to allow wearers to conceal their identity and social status, these masks became symbols of mystery and intrigue. They come in various styles, such as the Bauta (a full-face mask with a protruding chin), the Colombina (a half-mask often adorned with gold and feathers), and the Medico della Peste (a long-nosed "plague doctor" mask). Crafted from materials like papier-mâché, ceramic, or metal, Venetian masks remain popular today as souvenirs, in theatrical performances, and at masquerade events, continuing their legacy of elegance and secrecy.
Obtained in Venice in the 1970s.
