Christmas ornaments, baubles, globes, “Christmas bulbs,” or “Christmas bubbles” are decoration items, usually to decorate Christmas trees. These decorations may be woven, blown (glass or plastic), molded (ceramic or metal), carved from wood or expanded polystyrene, or made by other techniques. Ornaments are available in a variety of geometric shapes and image depictions, and ornaments are often keepsakes, as they are almost always reused year after year rather than purchased annually. Family collections often contain a combination of commercially produced ornaments and decorations created by family members, making them both a commodity and artefact in some cases. Such collections are frequently passed on and augmented from generation to generation, with festive figures commonly preferred, often with religious origins or inspirations. The modern-day tradition of crafting mold-blown colored glass Christmas ornaments is believed to have originated in the small German town of Lauscha in the mid 16th Century. Many towns have since adopted the practice, with Tlalpujahua in Mexico being a destination for tourists around the world as one of the largest producers. Prior to the invention of these baubles, Christmas trees were decorated with apples, candy canes, and shaped pastries, in accordance with the older traditions surrounding the ritual. The bright, shiny, and long-lasting nature of the glass ornaments quickly gained in popularity and spread across Germany throughout the Renaissance, leading to highly skilled artisans specializing in them. In 1840 a picture of a Christmas tree adorned with ornaments by a young Queen Victoria captured the imagination of her people, and Albert (originally from Germany) became instrumental in exporting Lauscha’s products to England as well as the rest of Europe. In the 1880s American businessman F. W. Woolworth discovered Lauscha’s baubles during a visit to Germany and nearly doubled his fortune by importing them to the United States. In 1996, the ornament industry generated $2.4 billion in total annual sales, an increase of 25% over the previous year, partially thanks to a strong campaign by Hallmark Keepsake Ornaments, the largest manufacturer of them in the US at the time. Since 2009 the Christmas decoration industry ranked second only to gifts in seasonal sales throughout the world. Although glass baubles are still produced as expensive good-quality ornaments often found at markets and through online distributors, many are now made from plastic and available worldwide in a massive variety of shapes, colors, and designs. Handcrafted Christmas ornaments have become a principal staple of arts and craft fairs, and many smaller online businesses owe much of their success to both the internet and the growth of craft stores.
