In 1897 English Staffordshire pottery manufacturer James Macintyre & Co. Ltd hired 24-year-old William Moorcroft as a designer, and within a year he was put in full charge of the company’s art pottery studio. Moorcroft created designs for the company’s Aurelian Ware range of High Victorian pottery, which had transfer-printed and enameled decoration in bold red, blue, and gold colors. His own Art Nouveau-influenced Florian Ware was decorated entirely by hand, with the design outlined in trailed slip using a technique known as tubelining. This technique has been used in almost all of Moorcroft’s art pottery ever since, as well as high-temperature flambé techniques, producing high glaze with vibrant color. Florian Ware was an immediate success, and won Moorcroft a gold medal at the 1904 World’s Fair. Unusually at that time, he adopted the practice of signing his name, or his initials, on nearly all the pottery he designed, the production of which he personally oversaw. In 1912, due to disputes over the direction the company should take, Moorcroft left Macintyre and approached luxury department store Liberty Retail Limited to help him open his own company. With their funding W. Moorcroft Limited was established with a nearby factory in Burslem in Stoke-Upon-Trent the following year. His extensive array of domestic tableware and tubelined, hand-painted art pottery was priced better than his former employer, and after Macintyre’s art pottery department was closed in 1913 the company pivoted to making electrical insulators, leaving Moorcroft with no local competition. Queen Mary became a collector of his works in the early 1920s, granting him a royal warrant in 1928. When William suffered a stroke in 1944 his eldest son Walter began to handle the company, taking over fully when William died the next year. Walter was granted a re-issued royal warrant and expanded the company further, facilitating the buy out of Liberty’s interest in 1962. Due to rising fuel and labor costs in the early 1980s, part of the company was sold to Roper Brothers in 1984 to negate financial difficulties and set up mass production. This was unsuccessful, however, and in 1986 Roper Brothers sold their share to business partners Hugh Edwards and Richard Dennis, whose wife Sally Tuffin became lead pottery designer when Walter stepped down the following year. In 1992 Dennis and Tuffin left the company, leaving the Edwards family as sole owners, although Walter continued to contribute until his last design, “Rock of Ages,” was launched in 1999. Today Moorcroft has five key designers and over a dozen assistants who continue to produce high quality art glass pieces that are sought after by collectors around the world.
