Description:
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Mahakam River, Dayak peoples, Bahau group, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful set of 3 stylized anthropomorphic figures, each hand-carved from wood exhibiting espresso brown hues. The first seated figure exhibits a recognizably anthropomorphic form and holds both arms in front of the narrow waist. The second figure is known as a hampatong (literally "figure" or "statue") and has lengthy fingers held together beneath an upturned tongue and a haunting countenance; a lizard rests atop its head. The largest hampatong figure is shown kneeling while its tongue drapes down to the middle of its chest. All 3 figures have developed wonderfully lustrous patina. Size of largest: 2.875" W x 10.75" H (7.3 cm x 27.3 cm)
Condition:
Each figure has minor nicks and abrasions, at least one stable hairline fissure, and very light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Great patina throughout. Two figures have old inventory labels beneath their bases.
Provenance: All antiquities were purchased at Artemis Gallery with COA.
