Helmut Newton was born Helmut Neustädter on October 31st, 1920 in Berlin, Germany. His family was Jewish, and he attended the Heinrich-von-Treitschke-Realgymnasium and the American School in Berlin. He purchased his first camera when he was 12, working for the German photographer Yva (Elsie Neuländer Simon) starting in 1936. He was briefly interned in a concentration camp on Kristallnacht in 1938, and fled Germany a month later aboard the Conte Rosso along with about 200 others escaping the Nazis, intending to journey to China. After arriving in Singapore Newton briefly worked as a photographer for the Straits Times and then as a portrait photographer. Newton was arrested by British authorities in 1940 for his German passport, and was sent to Australia on board the Queen Mary. Internees were taken to a camp at Tatura by train under armed guard, but Newton was eventually released in 1942 and found work as a fruit picker in Northern Victoria. In August of that year he enlisted with the Australian Army and worked as a truck driver. After the war ended he became a British subject, and changed his name to Newton in 1946. That same year Newton set up a studio in Melbourne and worked on fashion, theater, and industrial photography. In 1948 he married actress June Browne, who later became a successful photographer herself under the pseudonym Alice Springs, named after Alice Springs, a town in Central Australia. In 1953 Newton shared his first exhibition with Wolfgang Sievers, a German refugee like himself who had served in the same Australian company. This was the first presentation of New Objectivity photography in the country, and led Newton to a studio partnership with Henry Talbot, another German Jew who had been interned at Tatura. His association with the studio continued even after 1957, when Newton left Australia for London after obtaining a 12 month contract with British Vogue magazine. Despite his growing success he was unhappy with the restrictions and left the magazine before the end of his contract to move to Paris, where he worked for French and German magazines. He returned to Melbourne in March 1959 to a contract for Australian Vogue. Newton and his wife settled in Paris in 1961, working primarily for the French edition of Vogue as well as Harper’s Bazaar. He established a particular look marked by erotic, stylized images, often with sado-masochistic and fetishistic subtexts. A heart attack in 1970 reduced his output, but his wife’s encouragement led him to continue working. From then on he regularly used Polaroid instant cameras and film to get an immediate visualisation of composition and lighting, especially for his fashion photography, with his candid and quick shots sometimes more highly sought than his artfully posed final images. His reputation grew even more after the release of the 1980 “Big Nudes” series. His “Naked and Dressed” portfolio followed and, in 1992, “Domestic Nudes” marked the pinnacle of his erotic-urban style, courting controversy in the United States and Europe. Newton shot a number of pictorials for Playboy, including Nastassja Kinski and Kristine DeBell. Original prints of his works were doing well at auctions by the 2000s, and in later life Newton was one of the most famous photographers in the world, living in both Monte Carlo and Los Angeles, California at the Chateau Marmont. On January 23rd, 2004 he suffered a serious heart attack and died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. His frank and honest portrayal of human sexuality and form, warts and all, had a tremendous impact on photographic subjects and techniques into the 21st Century, and frequently redefined the definition of art through the medium.
