A display stand is a free-standing physical fitting in a shop, museum, gallery, or home on which items are arranged. They can be products for sale, pieces of art, or a part of a larger display or organized event. At its most basic, it is an advertising and merchandising tool that has a direct impact on product sales, and at its most aesthetic it can elevate a piece of art to a higher degree by drawing attention to it through isolation from other works. Display stands for statuary are the most common, as it complements the three-dimensional aspect of the sculpture and allows for viewing on multiple sides, usually. From a functional perspective, a display should focus the viewer’s attention, interest, desire, memory, and a series of mental activities through contemplation of an object, whether to inspire, engage, or entice. In addition to color, text, graphics, and other elements of interior design, the display stand can help draw a space together, or may be a part of a large group of stands that can display disparate pieces or draw parallels between them. Whereas heavy marble stands were the predominant style of art display up into the 19th Century, the development of lighter materials particularly by the early 20th Century led to a variety of new kinds of stands, pedestals, and presentational forms, sometimes floating or lit from within.
