William IV (William Henry; 1765 - 1837) was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and King of Hanover from June 1830 until his death in 1837. The third son of George III, William succeeded his elder brother George IV, becoming the last king and penultimate monarch of Britain’s House of Hanover. Aaron Hatfield (c.1763-1844) was originally an ivory and wood turner. In 1808 he registered a silver mark (AH*JH) as a close plater and silversmith in Pepper Alley. Further silver marks were registered in 1818 (A·H) and in 1823, when the enterprise was styled as Aaron Hatfield & Sons. Table knives and silver and plated cutlery became Hatfield’s forte, and in 1827 his son William left the business, opening his own silversmith shop in Manchester in 1841. When Aaron died in 1844 his other son John left, and his daughter Sarah, who had married a London silversmith named Richard Martin, absorbed the company into their own, Martin Brothers & Naylor.
