- Lot Description
20th Century Chinese Watercolor on Silk Painting of Xianfeng Emperor. Chinese painting of the Xianfeng Emperor and his court, a supplicant at his feet. Signed verso upper left corner. Marked on frame Frem NY, J. Brant, 1998.
Condition: Tears to fabric, loss to paint.
Overall Size: 56 1/2 x 39 1/4 in.
Sight Size: 52 3/4 x 35 1/2 in.The Xianfeng Emperor (1831–1861), born Aisin Gioro Yizhu, ruled China from 1850 until his death in 1861 during the late Qing Dynasty. His reign was marked by internal and external crises, including the Taiping Rebellion, one of the deadliest conflicts in history, and the Second Opium War, which led to foreign invasions and the sacking of the Summer Palace by British and French forces. Struggling with these challenges, he became increasingly dependent on court officials and his favored consort, Empress Dowager Cixi, who later played a dominant role in Qing politics. He died at the age of 30, leaving his young son, the Tongzhi Emperor, as his successor under a regency controlled by Cixi and other officials.
