These two books have similar titles and were illustrated by different people.
The first one is The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Rendered Into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald and Illustrated in Colour and in Line by Rene Bull. It was published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1913, according to WorldCat, it is 3/4 bound and has a spine that dazzles: there are three raised bands and elaborate green and gilt decorations on the spine, with floral and fruit motifs. The endpapers are marbled, followed by the half-title, then a beautiful colored frontis by Rene Bull that you can lift up with one finger, a captioned tissue guard to protect the plate, the title page, and eleven lift-up colored plates and nineteen color plates that are laid down on the pages - all the lift-up plates have captioned tissue guards. It is unpaginated, but it has 75 quatrains and numerous inline blue-green illustrations throughout the book, it was printed by Henry Stone & Son in Banbury, and the top edge is gilt.
Rene Bull (1872 - 1942) was a British illustrator and photographer born in Dublin, Ireland to a French mother and an English father. He studied engineering in Paris, but embarked on an artistic career after meeting French cartoonist and satirist Caran d’Ache, whose line drawings were noted for their crisp and forceful simplicity. Bull returned to Ireland, then moved to London in 1892 and eventually to Sudan to cover the military campaigns there, and then on to South Africa to record what he saw in the Boer Wars, but left after he was wounded in 1900, then returned to England to pick up cartooning and book illustration, and he illustrated this book for its 1913 debut.
The book measures 11 x 9 inches wide and is in great condition, with clean plates and a tight binding. There are small brown spots here and light rubbing at the tips, but overall a very attractive copy of this title illustrated by Rene Bull.
The other book is titled The Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam Rendered Into English Verse by Edward Fitzgerald with Illustrations by Edmund Dulac. It is bound in orange cloth, with black lettering on the spine and front cover, it has decorated endpapers with the name “Frank W. Ebaugh” stamped on the endpapers, then a colored frontis by Dulac and the title page, which says the book was published by Doubleday Doran in 1930, followed by a three-page list of Contents and Illustrations, a Biographical Preface about Edward Fitzgerald that runs from ix to xxiii, a background piece about Omar Khayyam, the Astronomer Poet of Persia, xxv - xxxviii, the text runs from 42 to page 197, and there are twelve full-page color plates, counting the frontispiece.
Edmund Dulac (1882 - 1953) was a French-born British citizen who studied law, then turned to art; his first commission was to illustrate the novels of the Bronte sisters, and he illustrated children’s books as well as magazines, and after World War I, he designed bank notes and postage stamps.
The book measures 10 x 7 1/2 inches wide and is in very good condition. The binding is tight and the pages and color plates are clean, with light fading along the edges of the spine, and together the two books are an attractive offering for someone who likes poetry, good illustrators and good art.
