(2) Modern Japanese Limited Edition Woodblock Prints, "Feather", "Crescent Night". Two modern Japanese woodblock prints, hand numbered and titled lower left (3/40 Crescent Night, 3/60 Feather), signed illegibly lower right. Obtained in Tokyo.
Japanese woodblock printing, known as ukiyo-e, is a traditional art form that flourished from the 17th to 19th centuries, showcasing vibrant, detailed images of landscapes, kabuki actors, historical scenes, and everyday life. Artists like Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Hiroshige are renowned for iconic works such as The Great Wave off Kanagawa and The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō. The process involved meticulous carving of designs into wooden blocks, inking them, and pressing them onto handmade paper, with separate blocks used for each color. These prints became popular for their affordability, mass appeal, and influence on Western art movements like Impressionism and Art Nouveau.
