Bulova is a New York based corporation making watches and clocks that was founded and incorporated as the J. Bulova Company in 1875 by Joseph Bulova (1851-1936), an immigrant from Bohemia. At first it focused on jewelry, and began making clocks in 1911, first as table and boudoir clocks and then wristwatches. In 1920 they moved to a new location on Fifth Street, where they built the first-ever observatory atop a skyscraper in order to calculate sidereal time. The company was reincorporated under the name Bulova Watch Company in 1923, and eventually became part of the Loews Corporation in 1979. In 1926 they created the first radio advertisement ever, shortly followed thereafter by the first clock radio. They became famous for a number of horological innovations, perhaps most notably the Accutron watch which used resonating tuning forks as a means of regulating the time keeping function. In July 1941 they paid $9 for the first television commercial, a 10-second spot on WNBT during a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies. The Joseph Bulova School of Watchmaking was founded in 1945 by Arde Bulova, Chairman of the Board, initially to provide training for disabled veterans after World War II. “Accutron” tuning fork watches, first sold by Bulova, use a 360 hertz tuning fork to drive a mechanical gear train. The inventor, Max Hetzel, was born in Basel, Switzerland, and joined the Bulova Watch Company of Bienne, Switzerland, in 1948. Hetzel was the first one to use an electronic device, a transistor, in a wrist watch, and the world-famous “Bulova Accutron” sold more than 4 million units until production stopped in 1977. They were the other half of the famous space era rivalry with Omega Watches, both vying to be the first watch on the moon. Ultimately, the Omega Speedmaster Professional chronograph wristwatch (known as the “Moon watch”) was designated by NASA for use by the astronauts in all manned space missions, becoming the first watch on the moon on the wrist of Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin. However, all instrument panel clocks and time-keeping mechanisms in the spacecraft on those missions were Bulova Accutrons with tuning fork movements, because at the time NASA did not know how well a mechanical movement would work in zero gravity conditions. Today, Bulova currently manufactures a limited edition “Astronaut” model under its Accutron line of watches.
Waterford Crystal is a manufacturer of lead glass or “crystal,” especially in cut glass, named after the city of Waterford, Ireland. The origins of crystal production in Waterford date back to 1783 when George Penrose and his nephew William started their business, the Waterford Glassworks. It produced extremely fine flint glass that became world-renowned. The company closed in June 1851 towards the end of the Great Famine, with the loss of 53-100 jobs. Multiple attempts to revive the company by the Irish government faltered for nearly a century, in part due to the two World Wars. Between 1947 and 1987 the company flourished under several different companies, and through the auspices of several different countries, including Czechoslovakia, Germany, and China, before consolidating into an Irish holding company called Waterford Wedgwood plc. In January 2009 the main manufacturing base on the edge of Waterford was closed due to insolvency brought on by the Great Recession, and in June 2010 Waterford Crystal relocated back to the roots of glass-making in the city center. As of 2015 the brand is owned by the Fiskars Corporation, and nearly all production is handled outside of Ireland, although they remain famous for their numerous unique creations, including the crystal ball that drops in Times Square in New York that they made in honor of the new Millennium.
