Two Japanese hand-painted Imari bowls. One large serving bowl painted on interior and exterior with grasses, flowers, butterflies and cranes. One small chawan bowl with figures among sakura branches.
Imariware, also known as Imari porcelain, is a type of Japanese porcelain that originated in the early 17th century in the town of Arita, in the Hizen Province (now Saga Prefecture). Named after the nearby port of Imari, from where it was shipped, this porcelain is renowned for its vibrant and intricate designs, often featuring a rich palette of colors like cobalt blue, red, and gold. Traditional motifs include floral patterns, landscapes, and mythical creatures, inspired by Japanese and Chinese artistic traditions. Imariware was highly valued in Europe during the Edo period and influenced many Western ceramics. Today, it continues to be celebrated for its craftsmanship and beauty, both as a historical artifact and a collectible item.
