**Cosimo Castrucci** was a renowned 16th-century Italian artist and craftsman, best known for his work in hardstone mosaics, a technique known as **pietra dura.** Originating from a family of skilled artisans, Castrucci became a master of this intricate art form, which involved creating images from precisely cut, polished, and fitted semi-precious stones. His work was highly prized in the courts of Europe, particularly in Florence, where he worked under the patronage of the Medici family. Castrucci's mosaics were celebrated for their extraordinary detail, vibrant colors, and the lifelike quality he achieved, often depicting religious themes, portraits, and intricate landscapes.
