Colibri is a company that supplies men’s accessories, initially manufacturing cigarette lighters for which they became world famous. Colibri was founded in London in 1928 by Julius Lowenthal, a jeweler who invented the world’s first working semi-automatic lighter. In 1935 he created the fully automatic Monopol lighter, which had an acceleration system. Early on in World War II their manufacturing facilities were destroyed by the Luftwaffe during the London Blitz. This prompted the development of the ‘Stormgard’ lighter, a weatherproof piece designed specifically for soldiers in battle. In 1952, Julius Lowenthal’s son Jack joined Colibri and began to help with advertising and coming up with modern designs. Together they produced a lighter with a visible multiple gas refill and a hydraulic auto-flint system in 1958, and one of the first all-electric lighters, which they named Molectric, in 1967. Julius passed away in 1970, at which time Jack’s son David began working at the company. They started making jewelry, small leather goods, and writing instruments after that. In 1974 the company supplied the unique golden gun for the James Bond film “The Man with the Golden Gun,” which was constructed from a Molectric 88 lighter. They also debuted their new cufflinks, modern cigarette cases, and intricate fountain pens in the film. The publicity led to Colibri sponsoring the winning Lombard RAC rally team later that same year, driven by Henry Liddon and Timo Mäkinen. In the 1980s David took over Colibri due to his father’s failing health, and crafted new items such as Swiss watches and knives. In 2001 the Vortex and Trifecta lines were introduced, with pyramidal twin-flame and triple flame lighters. In January of 2009 the company abruptly closed its doors in the wake of the 2008 economic crisis, announcing it was seeking the protections of filing a petition of receivership with the state of Rhode Island. Within a month of the move to America Colibri changed ownership again, with their head office transferring from Providence to New York City. They continue to produce innovative designs today, expanding once again after a major overhaul and rebranding in 2011, and their wares are sold worldwide on every continent.
