In 1949 an entrepreneur named Joseph B. Heller created the Skil-Craft Playthings Corporation in Chicago, Illinois. They manufactured a variety of items aimed at children, particularly tool sets, chemistry sets, and model kits that encouraged children to explore science through art. They continued to produce a wide and highly appreciated range of goods, including the Handy Andy tool set and the World of Science Chemistry and Biology sets, until the company was acquired by Western Publishing in 1968. By that time Heller’s insistence on high quality materials and clever advertising as well as the intellectual veracity of his products had made them the standard by which other toy companies were measured against, creating a generation of kits and sets that were unparalleled anywhere in the world. Heller went on to become a philanthropist and advocate for economic reforms and educational programs throughout the United States and Europe, as well as a renowned sculptor working in bronze, marble, and stainless steel, eventually passing away in 2008. The Skil-Craft name and many of their updated offerings continue to be in use, now under the ownership of Chartpak, a major arts and crafts supplier based in Massachusetts.
