German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz created one of the most striking cars of the 1930s, the 540K Spezial-Roadster (often referred to among car collectors simply as the Special Roadster). Only 26 of these amazing models were ever made, but it came to epitomize German engineering and luxury as their flagship after its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 1936, built by special order only. Engineer Gustav Rohr built upon the 500K’s original concept initially developed under the direction of Hans Nibel, making changes to the chassis and adding a supercharged 5.4 liter inline-8 that could propel any style of body with relative ease, with his eyes on dominating the Grand Prix permanently. These flowing two-seaters were one of the most striking prewar designs, easily distinguished by their prominent hood, sweeping fenders, recessed grill, external exhaust pipes, raked windscreen and extreme length. Hermann Ahrens was responsible for styling the Special Roadster, turning the 17-foot-long behemoth into Germany’s most iconic supercar. Although factory records show that nearly 400 540Ks were built, the small number of Spezial-Roadsters was due both to rapidly deteriorating relations between Germany and the rest of Europe as well as their specialization, not to mention their incredible speed was suited for few places besides the Autobahn. The most recent auctions of the Special-Roadsters have all fetched handsome prices, with one in 2023 bringing over $5 million.
