Not long after Plexiglas became available, Plastic Productions Company of Redwood City, California began to manufacture housewares using acrylic sheets. These products were primarily black in color, although they also carried a gray tone created by the graining process during production. As a result, the products were initially marketed under the ‘Gray n Ware’ brand, later changed to ‘Grainware.’ Charles McCrea, who owned the Plastic Productions Company, was also its chief product designer. In 1951 the Museum of Modern Art in New York acquired a number of Grainware products, where they remain on display to this day. In 1971 the Plastic Productions Company was acquired by SiLite Inc., a housewares and giftware manufacturer based in Chicago, Illinois. Under its president, Robert Parmacek, SiLite introduced new products made using clear acrylic sheets under the Grainware brand, which were wildly successful. Consequently, Grainware became known as a brand of predominantly clear acrylic products. In 1991 Carlisle Companies Inc. acquired SiLite Inc. and the Grainware brand. In 2012 Jolly Tone acquired the Grainware brand in partnership with William Bounds Ltd of Torrance, California, and the two companies continue to function side-by-side.
Carlisle Companies was founded in 1917 in Carlisle, Pennsylvania by Charles S. Moomy. It was originally called Carlisle Tire and Rubber Company, after Moomy left his father’s company, the Keystone Rubber Company in Erie, to work for himself. In its early years the company gained scale as a key player in the tire market and pursued a holding company strategy to become one of the largest diversified industrial companies in America by the end of the 20th Century. However, the Great Depression nearly destroyed the company early on as the price of rubber fell to just 3 cents a pound. Moomy closed two deals to avoid bankruptcy, one with Montgomery Ward and the other with Chase National Bank, who became long-term partners with Carlisle. After Moomy died unexpectedly from a heart attack in 1940 the company again began to founder. In 1943 Carlisle’s primary competitor, Pharis Tire and Rubber Company of Newark, Ohio, negotiated a deal with the Federal Reserve Bank and Farmers Trust to take over Carlisle, using the pretense of needing to fill extremely large wartime orders. The owner, Furber Marshall, simultaneously acquired the brake lining business Molded Materials Company in Ridgway, Pennsylvania. Poor post-War decisions led the growing company into dire straits by the mid 1950s, and G.L. Ohrstrom & Co. merged them with Rotary Lift Company of Memphis, Tennessee to create the Carlisle Corporation in 1954. They became a supplier of construction products focused on making buildings more energy efficient and resilient, selling single-ply roofing products as well as warranted systems and accessories for the commercial building industry. In 1960 Ohstrom Sr. passed away and his son Ohstrom Jr. took over, capitalizing on his service in World War II and his relationship with the U.S. State Department as well as France to expand the empire significantly. In the 1970s the company was organized into two dominant segments, Carlisle Construction Materials and Carlisle Weatherproofing Technologies, with dozens of additional offshoots appearing in the decades after. They opened their first international operation in Europe in 1972, with over ten different divisions throughout the Western Bloc by the time the Soviet Union collapsed. The company’s product portfolio included moisture protection products, protective roofing underlayments, integrated air and vapor barriers, spray polyurethane foam and coating systems, but also came to provide food service, craft products, loan management, and even table- and servingware, such as their “Grainware” Division in Northbrook, Illinois. In the 2000s the company absorbed Finishing Brands, Inc., MicroConnex, and Providien LLC, which were chemical, flex circuit, and medical device manufacturers, respectively, solidifying further diversification and promoting syzygy with nearly every possible market. However, downturns in the worldwide economy and the COVID-19 pandemic led to their first divestments, particularly their food service and telecommunications divisions, in the 2010s and 20s. Today their headquarters are in Arizona, and the majority of the company’s revenue comes from the Carlisle Construction Materials segment, with more than half of the total revenue earned in the United States. They employ over 12,100 employees across three continents, and their products can be found in over half of all the homes in North America.
