In 1907 Herbert Marcus Sr., a former buyer with the Dallas-based Texas Sanger Brothers department store, had left his previous job to either found or buy a new business with his sister Carrie Marcus Neiman and her husband, Abraham Lincoln Neiman, then employees of A. Harris and Co. The trio had accumulated $25,000 from a successful sales-promotion firm they had built in Atlanta, Georgia, and had two potential investments lined up. The three entrepreneurs rejected the idea of buying a fledgling Coca-Cola company and chose instead to establish their own retail business in Dallas. The store was lavishly furnished and stocked with goods from New York, showcasing higher quality clothing than the previous companies they had worked for and quickly dominating the Dallas market. Oil-rich Texans snapped up the sophisticated fashions, which helped them weather the Panic of 1907, but in 1914 a fire destroyed the store and all of its merchandise. By the end of that year, thanks to loyal customers and investors, a new permanent flagship location was established on Main and Ervay Street, and the Neiman Marcus Building has been their home base ever since. The increased size of the store allowed them to expand to include accessories, lingerie, and children’s clothing, as well as a significantly larger women’s apparel department, and their first year of sales resulted in double the profits in their prior location. In 1927 Neiman Marcus premiered the first weekly retail fashion show in the United States, which later sparked galas run by other stores around the country. The store began offering full menswear lines in 1929, and were even more successful by quickly pivoting to making less-expensive clothing lines available in response to the Great Depression. Despite a major fire in 1946, the store continued to profit throughout World War II. Herbert died in 1950, and Carrie Neiman died two years later, leaving Herbert’s son Stanley Marcus in charge of the company’s operations. Stanley spearheaded opening a second store in Dallas, which had themed decor inspired by the art and culture of Southwestern Native Americans. His interest in European and indigenous art had a further impact on the colors, fabrics, and styles of their clothing lines throughout the 1960s as well. Their extravagant marketing efforts and inclusion of portrait studios and Christmas themes events and goods brought them national acclaim, and over the next twenty years they opened or acquired five other stores in Texas. In 1971 the first Neiman Marcus outside Texas opened in Bal Harbour, Florida, and in subsequent years stores opened in over 30 cities across the United States, including Atlanta, Charlotte, Beverly Hills, Boston, Chicago, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, San Francisco and St. Louis. In 1987 Bergdorf Goodman was acquired by the Neiman Marcus Group, which is also when the original hyphenated spelling of the company name was abandoned. Stanley Marcus died on January 22nd, 2002, and without his influence as president and chairman of the board ownership of the company changed hands multiple times throughout the 2000s and 2010s. After a bankruptcy filing in 2020 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, they exited Chapter 11 and as of today are owned by a consortium of investment firms, with plans to merge with their main competitor Saks Fifth Avenue in the coming years.
