F. M. Whiting & Co. was founded in 1878 in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. It became Frank M. Whiting & Company in 1896 and continued manufacturing under that name until the firm was acquired by Ellmore Silver Co. around 1940. Ellmore acquired Amston and Concord silver companies at the same time, and continued to produce a number of the older F. M. Whiting patterns marked with Amston or Concord trademarks. When Ellmore closed in 1960, they were still making pieces with all three marks on them.
Thomas Mac Fergus Cooper was born Thomas Ferguson Cooper on September 24th, 1896 in Stirling, Scotland. His father was a carpenter who moved the family to Lancashire in 1898 to work on a brewery. In 1905 his father left England for Canada where he had been hired to work at the newly-founded Hamilton Iron and Steel Company in Ontario, and a year later Cooper, his mother, and his three siblings all traveled to be with him, applying for permanent Canadian citizenship. His father died in an accident in 1908, and he assisted his older brother throughout his teens at the Iron and Steel Company to help support the family. In 1916 Cooper enlisted and served with the Canadian Army Infantry overseas. Here he was exposed to the art of the Old Masters and began to draw in his free time. After his honorable discharge in 1919 he moved to the United States, where he enrolled in the Art Students League in New York City. He moved back to Canada briefly in 1922 to help the family after their mother passed away, but returned to New York in 1925 when his first work was accepted by the pulp magazine Adventure, who contracted him to create covers and inserts for future issues. He married in 1926 but divorced three years later, the same year he added the “Mac” to his name. He spent the first turbulent years of the Great Depression traveling the country and Mexico, painting watercolors which were frequently exhibited in New York. He married his second wife, Doris Von Kaulbach, in 1931; she spoke four languages and frequently assisted him in arranging his exhibitions, both solo and in groups. In 1933 they moved into an abandoned lighthouse in Setauket, New York, where Cooper began to experiment with creating comic characters and illustrations. He became President of the Suffolk County Society of the Arts, and his first comic strip, “Buckskin Jim,” was published in 1935. In the late 1930s he and his wife spent time in Germany, eventually convincing Doris’ mother to leave the country and move to America with them. In 1942 Cooper registered with the selective service but was not sent into action in World War II, partially due to his wife’s German ancestry. In 1947 Cooper began working with Delano Print Studio to produce hand-painted plates featuring many of his watercolor designs, especially maritime works. Health issues began to take their toll, and he passed away in his lighthouse home on May 16th, 1950. His wife died two months later, and most of his non-commercial works are still in private collections throughout the New England area.
One plate has a crumpled side. Commensurate with age.
