Bormioli Rocco is an Italian manufacturer of household goods now operating under the name Bormioli Luigi SpA. The company is one of Italy’s oldest and leading suppliers of tableware and glassware. The Bormioli family was originally from Altare, in the hinterland of Savona, where the family name was already known in the art of glassmaking since the Middle Ages. In 1825 Luigi Bormioli left Altare and moved to Borgo San Donnino (renamed Fidenza in 1927) in the province of Parma. Luigi started a glassware company of his own with money he inherited from his father, and the company was soon supplying glass cookware and serving sets to the local area, expanding to ship outside of Italy by 1830. After Luigi’s death in 1832 his wife Petronilla led the company for the next 22 years with their three sons. In 1854 the company purchased the Royal Factory of Ceramics and Glasses Strada Farnese in Parma, and changed their name to Brothers Bormioli Glassware once the consolidation was finished. Petronilla passed away that same year, and the brothers spent the next decade mechanizing and updating its production process, eventually moving their main facility into a larger structure near San Leonardo. In 1880 the company name was changed to Bormioli Rocco Glass and Son, and upon Rocco’s death in 1893 his son Luigi took over, but kept the name as it was in his honor. During World War I the name was changed to simply Bormioli Rocco, and they tried to weather economic and political upheavals by embracing the use of plastics, as well as expanding into crafting items for scientific and pharmaceutical purposes. The factory was completely destroyed by bombs in 1943, and finally rebuilt in 1946 with significant automation technology replacing most of their old systems. By the 1960s they were employing more than 1,600 people, and had regained a worldwide sales network. In the 1980s the company acquired others in Italy and abroad, changing their name to the Bormioli Group in 1989. The new company made primarily glass products for the household sector, with subdivisions devoted to industrial packaging for pharmaceutical, perfume, cosmetics, and food use, respectively. A financial crisis in the 1990s forced the company to cede a majority stake to Banca Popolare di Lodi, and they were eventually absorbed completely, becoming part of Gruppo Banca Popolare through its subsidiary Spa Efibanca Italian. In 2011 it was sold to private equity firm Vision Capital, and today they operate nine plants, two decorative ateliers, nine retail stores, and one flagship store, with a presence in over 100 countries and over 2,500 employees worldwide.
