II have always been fascinated by owls. Barn owls (Strigiformes Tytonidae Alba) are native to New Mexico. They are one of our most beneficial birds, owing to their appetite for animal pests: rodents and insects. Their large forward-facing stereoscopic eyes and ear holes enable a great sense of depth perception for low-light nocturnal hunting, and they have an innate ability to fly slowly and almost silently.
Indigenous American cultures associate owls with sorcery, supernatural evil, and death. In contrast, Western cultures dating back to ancient Greece associated owls with wisdom and power.
Because of my fascination with this paradox of perception, behavior, and nocturnal versus light and visual acuity, the Barn Owl Nest Box is a metaphor for the owl’s symbolism. It houses the nesting brood in a copper-clad hollow reminiscent of a tree trunk, while providing light by illuminating the area beneath it when an intruder approaches. As an element derived from the cosmogony’s heavens of blood, fire, water and divine justice, copper comes down to earth as lightning as it digs its way into the earth with thunderbolts, exuding the power of the owl.
