Dark Hollow is constructed of polished wood, dyed black, with a milled aluminum tip. It is 4 feet and 4 inches tall with a maximum diameter of a little over 9 inches. The entry hole and nesting chamber are sized to be suitable for a variety of small birds in almost any climate. The house has ventilation and drainage holes and is well insulated from excessive temperatures. The top of the nesting chamber can be opened for cleaning.
Douglas Levy was born in New York in 1979. He holds professional degrees in architecture from the Cooper Union in New York and from the University of Florida, where he focused on sustainable design and ecology. His wood sculpture work has been recognized by an award from the American Institute of Architects, Florida Chapter. Douglas currently lives and works in New York City as an architect and consultant for large buildings, including the new World Trade Center complex and National 9/11 Memorial Museum.
