- Lot Description
Japanese four panel floor or room screen with mother-of-pearl and bone inlay depicting wisteria and various birds, late 19th or early 20th century. With a well carved and pierced gallery along the top of the screen.
Height: 60 in x width: 112 in.Condition
The screen is structurally sound and stable. There are no major chips, losses, or restorations to the wooden border of the screen. General wear throughout. some dust collected in the recessed areas of the work. There are some splits to the center panels, most visible along the upper right corner of the right-most panel (with the ducks) and the upper center of the panel second from the right (with the chickens). There are some losses and rubbing to the paint layer. Some small losses to the applied mother-of-pearl and bone. The largest loss is to the neck of the lowest bird perched in the branch on the left-most panel. To the back of the work the cracks mentioned before are more noticeable. Some further scuffs and scratches. Wear and some losses to the applied decoration along the back. There are two decorative keys along the lower edge of the left-most panel that are detached; one is missing and one is included with the lot but is not attached.
