Attributed Amedeo Modigliani (Italian, 1884-1920). Graphite and crayon on paper drawing titled "Caryatid" depicting a kneeling feminine figure, ca. 1913. Signed along the lower right. Around 1913 Modigliani began a series of drawings of caryatids, executing the works in drawings, watercolors, and gouaches. This work was long attributed to this series of artworks.

Exhibition: "Fakes and Forgeries," Minneapolis Institute of Arts, July 11 - September 29, 1973, cat. no. 207 - This work was noted as the genuine drawing when compared to three forgeries of a similar theme.

The colors are bold and deep. The sheet is toned. The drawing has been laid (affixed) onto a paper backing. Minute chips and minute tears along the edges. There are areas of repaired tears throughout which fluoresce under UV light. Areas where the paper has been reinforced, which also fluoresce under UV light. Areas of light soiling throughout which may have been treated. Housed between two non-acidic matboards. Framed under plexiglass; light wear to the frame.
