Boris Klinch (Harry Petrushansky), 1892-1946
Soviet graphic, caricature, poster artist and illustrator. An author of photomontage satirical compositions. He worked as a satirist in the newspaper "Working Moscow", "Atheist" magazines, "Paprika" and "Crocodile".
Better known as Boris Klinch - interesting artists of the 1930s, was one of the first who used a photomontage in poster creating. Some of the artwork he made with artist V. Kozlinskiy.
The "Crocodile" magazine printed the works of the famous German artist, John Hartfield. He was a founder of the satirical photomontage in the art world of caricature. Hartfield creativity quickly gained popularity around the world and has given birth to a number of followers and disciples. Boris Klinch was the first who seriously engaged in satirical photomontage in the USSR.
In the 1930’s many artists used a photomontage technique in different ways, G. Klutsis, V. Koretsky, Bukharov, Kulagin, N. Dolgorukov, B. Denny, but practically Harry Petrushansky (Boris Clinch) was the first who combined this technique with a caricature. Subsequently, this was done by many artists of satirical magazines and posters, including artists from the 1970-80’s.
Composition, perspective, the proportionality of the photographs and most importantly, the brightness of the artistic ideas do artwork by Boris Klinch phenomenon in the art of caricature.
Some of the artist's photomontages published in the form of posters and postcards. Unfortunately, Boris Klinch started doing this only at the end of his career. The early death did not give him an opportunity to more clearly show his talent in the interesting genre of graphic satire.
Artworks and posters of Boris Klinch are in the Russian State Library, the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War, Memorial Museum of German anti-fascists in Krasnogorsk, Rybinsk state historical-architectural and art museum-reserve, private collections in Russia and the UK.
