Athena
bronze and crystal sculpture, 1983, signed and dated at base, set on wood base. 12 3/4"h
"It was during her first year of graduate school that Linda Ackley was tapped for the honor of creating a three-dimensional award that would represent the remarkable individuals known as ATHENA Recipients. The design for the sculpture was inspired by a gesture made by Martha Mertz, ATHENA Founder, during a meeting with Ackley. “She talked about ‘celebration of achievement’ and that sparked my research on mythological figures. I presented her with four ideas for names and she chose ATHENA,” stated Ackley. Athena’s qualities of courage and wisdom, guided and enlightened by reason exemplified many of the facets of women’s leadership that Mertz wanted to convey.
