Proveance: Private New York CollectorCatalog Notes: The Songye people are best known for their nkisi which are figures embued with magical substances and act as mediators and spirtual proctors from evil forces. The care for the owner acting as balancing forces captable of both good and harm. A Nkisi is made through collaboration of a ritual expert and carver. Common characteristics of Nkisi figure including circular bases, large heads with square chins and open mouth, and hand held on the belly. They can also have metal adornment on the face and head. Cavities are created in the head and belly and filled with magical substances. They are then sealed with protruding horn. Figures can be small and used for personal use or large and used to protect an entire village.
