An elephant headdress mask. Nigeria, Igbo. 20th century. 17 1/4"h x 8 1/2"w x 11 1/2"d.
Provenance: Inventory and Collection from the Estate of Merton D. Simpson. Catalog Notes: Though occasionally used a lineage mask during memorial ceremonies for the dead, the elephant mask is rarely used as like the leopard, the elephant is considered a royal animal and can only be worn and represented by particular familial lines. Because of the significance of the elephant, when the dance mask is used it follows second after the dance leader of the ceremony and is one of the last figures to exit.
