An Ibeji figure with cowrie cape. Nigeria, Yoruba. 20th century. 10 1/2"h x 7 1/2"w x 3 1/2"d.
Provenance: Inventory and Collection from the Estate of Merton D. Simpson. Catalog Notes: This is a particularly fine Ibeji figure from the Abeokuta region of Nigeria. Some Ibeji figure like this one wear cowrie shell covered capes. These capes are smaller representational versions of those worn by priests during Shango rituals. To the Yoruba, the cowrie shell symbolizes the god Shango who among other things is the god of material wealth. As the cowrie shells were an ancient form of money, it is fitting that they adorn the garments.
