Beuys Flight to America Self-Portrait Print Proof Signed. This print by Joseph Beuys (German,1921-1986) is signed in blue felt pen and also bears the artist's "Hauptstrom" stamp. Appears to be part of a a limited edition series of proof sheets of an image that was included in Beuy's
Postkarten series, published by Edition Staeck, Heidelberg. Previous auction records for this print are few but suggest reference to Catalogue raisonné #96, cf. Schellmann P 16, cf. Neuhaus 30. Also included in this lot is a book on Beuys published by Barron's in 1979.
The photograph depicts Beuys on his first flight to America, with the plane's cleaning cloth covering his face - a striking image simultaneously evocative of Beuys's shamanic persona, his pivotal survival of a WWII plane crash in Crimea with the help of nomadic Tartars, and his legendary performance
I Like America and America Likes Me, in which the artist was shrouded in a felt blanket during much of his time cohabiting a gallery with a wolf.
