- Lot Description
Lot of 20 Clark Murray Minimalist Gradient Paintings; Tans & Yellows. Group of watercolor study paintings on 4 x 6 and 9 x 6 inch paper, with 4 bands of color. A couple are signed on the back Clark and dated 2000. This lot is in tan, yellow, off white and sunset colors.
Dimensions are 4 in h x 6 in w and 9 in h x 6 in w. Condition is good with surface wear and discoloration to edges. Please call or email for a detailed condition report.
Clark Murray (American 1937-2022) was "one of the pioneering generation of minimal painters from the sixties, Clark Murray had his first one-man exhibition with the legendary west coast art dealer Nicholas Wilder in 1966. Well known at the time for creating horizontal, monochromatic, shaped canvasses, Murray's work was both minimal and sculptural. He experimented with metal and other sculptural materials in his work. He exhibited his paintings in New York City with the Bykert Gallery in 1966. Clark Murray moved to New York City from Los Angeles during the heyday of minimalism in the late sixties. Tough minded and precise Murray's work expresses a particular poetic solitude and quiet mystery. His tonal paintings reflect his lifelong interest in the quiet simplicity of placing abstract colors in relationship to one another and to their support. These paintings also reflect his masterful feeling for surface and his painterly touch." (Ronnie Landfield 1999). Clark Murray became best known as a sculptor of large outdoor constructions of welded and painted steel pipes.
