Pre Civil War diary documenting Aaron Good's journey west. The diary starts In Saline County, Missouri in April of 1853. Beginning May 6, the entries are nearly daily until the end of the diary, July 17. There is an entry on August 14 and a final entry on August 19. The diary ends with the party outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. Included are numerous mentions interactions with Native Americans, including an incident where their cattle were shot with arrows after a case of misidentification, followed the next morning by the Chief coming to apologize. Other entries mention a threat of being scalped and encountering Native Americans returning from a battle with a prisoner in tow. The final page includes a breakdown of cost and expenses for the beginning of the trip from Sharpsburg, Maryland to Miami, Missouri, which is approx. where the diary begins. Throughout the writings are detailed accounts of landscapes and animals encountered on the journey west. Aaron Good returned to Sharpsburg, Maryland following the battle at Antietam, where he was one of the main men responsible for exhuming and identifying remains of thousands of deceased soldiers. 5 3/4" x 4".
