Pennsylvania William & Mary cedar spice chest, ca. 1725, with profuse compass line inlays of potted tulips and heart corners, the interior with nine inlaid drawers resting on bun feet, 18 1/4" h., 15 3/4" w. An early note accompanying this lot discusses the history of the chest and its descent in the Leech family, written by Caroline Ash, daughter of John Ash of Philadelphia. She reminisces Good by Dear Little Chest, my earliest Plaything. Few Pennsylvania spice chests feature decoration on all sides, as well as the top. Although related to the more recognizable " line and berry" furniture of Chester County, this chest is likely an early precursor made in Philadelphia. The use of cedar as a primary wood also indicates an urban manufacture. Illustrated in Schiffer's Furniture and Its Makers of Chester County Pennsylvania, fig. 125.
