- Lot Description
Lititz, Pennsylvania Moravian silk on silk memorial embroidery needlework, ca. 1805, attributed to Sarah Pim, the memorial inscribed Columbia mourns for Washington, with weeping woman and seated woman with sheep, all under a willow tree, 12" x 15 1/2". This is the earliest known Lititz silk mourning embroidery. Sara Pim is listed in the 1805 roster of the Lititz Boarding School. Pictured in The Ornamental Branches, Needlework and Arts from the Lititz Moravian Girls' School Between 1800 and 1865, by Patricia T. Herr, page 38, fig. 15. Provenance: Purchased from the descendants of the maker, Virginia S. Olkowskit and Sarah Savery Venn in 1994.
