English execution broadside, A true Copy of a Letter, Written by John Bolt, while under Sentence of Death, being an open Confession of every thing relating to the unhappy circumstance which brought him to the gallows. Written to the Young Woman whom he loved and attempted to murder, having shot away her right cheek and eye, and two fingers of her right hand, from the condemned cell, at the Castle of Exeter, March 31st, 1823, likely printed and sold at the public execution of Bolt, printed by John Mudge, an eloquently written apology, the second paragraph reading For when you administered to my wound the healing balm, little did you think I was receiving the deadly shaft deep in my heart -- I saw -- I was grateful (for I thought it my duty so to be) in short, I loved you to madness -- my senses were bewildered -- my tortured mind pictured you in the possession of another -- the Devil seized the opportunity of my phrenzied state, and forsaken my devine assistance, tempted me to sin -- I was lost to human reason, and forsaken my devine assistance, given up a prey to Satan, and in that lost state I resigned myself entirely to the most baneful passions -- your death was become my daily prayer, 10" x 14 1/2".
