Charles Peale Polk (American 1767-1822), oil on canvas portrait of David Brickell Kerr (1749-1814), Kerr was a Talbot County, Maryland Justice of the Peace and delegate to the General Assembly. This is the companion piece to the portrait of Mrs. Kerr painted by Polk's uncle and mentor Charles Willson Peale in 1790. Kerr is portrayed in half-length, seated gracefully in front of a green curtain, under which a glimpse of his legal library is visible, including The Justice of the Peace and Parish Officer, by Richard Burns, London, 1755. At his elbow is a copy of Thomas Paine's 1791 The Rights of Man, signed and dated lower center on table Ch Polk pinx / 1791, 35 1/2" x 29". The portrait of Mrs. Kerr was also in the possession of Mark Brickell Kerr in 1952. Literature: Charles Peale Polk, A Limner and His Likenesses, Linda Crocker Simmons, Corcoran Gallery of Art, 1981, p. 39. Provenance: Descended in the family; Mark Brickell Kerr, Staten Island, New York, 1948; A private collection, 1981; The Estate of Peter Tillou.
