With pencil notations on the reverse of stretcher identifying the scene and possibly the artist (G.B. Sherman?). A finely detailed and verdant depiction of the oft-painted historical landmark house in Dedham, Massachusetts. With craquelure and some areas of loss to edges and lower right, where there is some repaired damage. 17 3/4" x 26 1/2", framed to 25 1/2" x 34 1/2" The Fairbanks House was built in 1637 and is the oldest surviving timber-frame house in North America, as it was when this painting was made around the turn of the 20th century; when the house was still occupied by the descendants of Jonathan Fairbanks. Today it is open to the public as a museum. The house has been painted by a number of New England artists, most notably by the impressionist master Childe Hassam, whose 'Old Fairbanks House' is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. This painting has been in one New England family for several generations.
