Artist/Designer; Manufacturer: Earl Linderman (American, 1931-2023)
Marking(s); notes: signed
Materials: oil on canvas
Dimensions (H, W, D): 48"h, 48"w; 50"h, 49.5"w frame
Additional Information: Work is titled "Doktor Thrill and Wolf Walk at Sunset." Doktor Thrill is a recurring character in Linderman's work, and the protagonist of his 1982 art book, "The True and Incredible Adventures of Doktor Thrill." Provenance: Collection of Mrs. Audrey Larman, West Palm Beach, Florida.
This work in particular evokes strong memories for Audrey Larman's grandchildren. "For as long as I can remember, the Richard Lindner painting in my grandmother's home stood out. The dramatic image and use of colors were intriguing and even frightening in my younger years. At times I would cover my face when I walked past the painting, leaving just enough space to catch a glimpse, but not enough for the imagination to run wild. Later, I told my grandmother how afraid I used to be of that painting. Her response was that art can create all sorts of emotions for people, and that is why it is so special. This has been a perspective that remained with me through the years since."
Audrey Larman's grandchildren recall her passion for art, suffusing their childhood memories: "My grandma was a lover of art in every form. She adored Picasso, Calder, Dubuffet, and others. She loved taking my brother and I to museums around the world. We would point to a painting on the wall and she would always know the name of the artist. Her homes were the perfect canvas to make her art the star. The paintings are all bold and some dramatic. As children, we would imagine that her paintings would magically come to life. Over the years, she donated significant artwork and fashion - Jean Dubuffet, Bill Blass, and others - to museums, most notably the Indianapolis Museum of Art, so others might enjoy them as well."
