Tony Sarg (1880-1942) Lithograph "The Old Custom House, Nantucket", pencil signed lower right, Tony Sarg, '25, matted and framed.
14.25 in. x 13 in. Overall 21 in. x 19 in.
In the spring of 1772 successful Nantucket whaling merchant William Rotch began constructing a new, 3-story brick building at the bottom of Main Street which he used as offices and a warehouse for his growing business.
Rotch's structure survives today and is the only 18th century brick building still standing on Nantucket. For 140 years it was the center of Nantucket business, first for captains of William Rotch & Sons ships and later as home base for the island's customs house, weather bureau, district court and the Pacific Club, which began as an exclusive gathering of Nantucket's storied ship captains. Born in 1734, William Rotch was a Nantucket Quaker and made his fortune as a ship owner and spermaceti candle manufacturer at a time when Nantucket was the third largest port in New England behind Boston and Salem.Condition
