Monumental American Shadowbox of the Nantucket Whaleship "Two Brothers", 19th Century, depicting the Two Brothers with a pilot boat off her bow passing a rocky headland with lighthouse. The background is oil on canvas, as are the chamfered side panels, in original lemon gilt and vinegar paint frame. The Two Brothers was a Nantucket whaleship that was sailing west through the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands during a storm when the ship's captain George Pollard, Jr., unclear of his ship's position, ran aground and sank on a reef near French Frigate Shoals the evening of February 11, 1823.
