Two piece ALS letter from Queen Elizabeth II addressed to her sister Princess Margaret, written in pencil and signed "Elizabeth", on Balmoral Castle letterhead. Dated September 2, 1965. Reads "My Dear Margaret, Forgive pencil but I can't find any ink for my fountain pen. This is the most impossible pencil - must be meant for mostly pencil sketches! I am so sorry you had to wait for an answer with your letter marked "immediate" - you will have seen the reason if my telegram showed that it was dispatched from here. I rang up Mummy & she thought it would be quite a good plan to have P?itchett in the house if the basement room is in order - it would certainly be a help if she would do just a little to help Lizzie - we had not counted on the basement room. The trouble is it is quite uninhabitable as it is, What hope is there of the workmen putting in an appearance? Another very important point to settle is whether there is to be any cash payment in any direction - Are we to pay her for anything she does for us - if so is she going to pay us for her food - or how is this all going to work[?]. Perhaps she & Mummy had better talk it over when Mummy goes south with Margaret (as I think she intends to do one on the last day of Sept.) There is no reason you should bother about such things. I am glad you have got right away from all the house & UNNRT worries. I do hope you will begin to feel ? better. Margaret & I went to Glen? on Tuesday. Lovely weather most of the time we have been here. With love, Elizabeth"
